Date of Wedding: September 09, 1999
Married At: Red Rock Canyon
After much discussion about where to marry - back in Ohio surrounded by my family and friends or a small wedding at a private location on a beach with just a few friends, we finally decided to marry locally with whatever friends or family could attend. The date was decided - 9/9/99 (he'll never forget it!) long before we could decide on the details.
We waited until the last few days for most of the details but we did check with Red Rock and they advised us to reserve the area we wanted to use. It cost us $80 and we were able to reserve the area at the 1/2 way point. This was well worth it as we were starting and a limo arrived, without any reservations, hoping to use it. As we were driving out, we saw them being married to the side of the road, lit by the limo's headlights. We timed it to occur at sundown and we had great weather with a cool breeze.
We had about 20 people in attendance, including a motorcyclist who agreed to take a picture of the entire group. After the ceremony, conducted by a long-time friend of Gene's and including our own vows, we were able to raise our glasses with champagne/other bubbly and toast our union while watching a shooting star overhead. Quite a memorable evening....
Flowers were also easy to obtain, again we decided just a few days ahead and florist was extremely helpful in assisting us in making decisions and flowers were better than I could have hoped.
After checking into possible reception options, we opted to go to Cozymel's and everyone ordered individually off the menu. We did arrange to drop off a cake ahead of time - they put it in the refrigerator for us and brought it out and served it, with no problems. (The cake came from Costco and was quite good - my 4 year old nephew was delighted that it had pudding inside - actually a chocolate creme filling.)
Then, looking at our watches, we realized we had to rush to the airport - we were flying overnight to Florida for a Disney honeymoon, including cruise, and a few days in Cocoa Beach to relax before coming back to Vegas.
Admittedly, we didn't participate in some of the famous Vegas Wedding traditions - no Elvis, no wedding chapel, no Klingons (we understand it is possible to marry at the Star Trek experience), but we will always have a special evening with friends to remember.
